ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The Antigua and Barbuda government says the death of the former Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, has left the Caribbean island “poorer and without one more dependable ally.”

Berlusconi, an Italian media tycoon, politician, and billionaire who served as the prime minister of Italy in four governments from 1994 to 1995, died on Monday. He was 86 years.

He died at Milan’s San Raffaele hospital, where he was admitted on Friday. A hospital spokesperson said that his five children, partner Marta Fascina and younger brother Paolo were with him.

In extending condolences to the Government and people of Italy, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the former Italian prime minister was especially fond of Antigua and Barbuda and had acquired a home here, frequently visiting with family and friends.
Browne said several Italian investments in Antigua were primarily the result of Berlusconi’s influence and encouragement.

“His Excellency, Mr. Silvio Berlusconi, has been a good friend of Antigua and Barbuda. His death has left us poorer and without one more dependable ally,” Browne said in a statement, describing Berlusconi as “a transcendent political leader who played a significant role in his own country, helping to modernize his country’s economy further.”

A state funeral will be held in Milan Cathedral on Wednesday.
