PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro has reiterated that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) will not tolerate the presence of “home invasion gangs” in the country after police shot and killed one person allegedly involved in a home invasion.
“Let me be clear that the TTPS will not allow home invasion gangs to terrorize the elderly, the vulnerable, or any law-abiding citizen. Yesterday’s attack in Ben Lomond Village was cowardly and calculated, but our officers moved with precision, and within hours the suspects responsible were intercepted,” Guevarro said in a statement.
“When armed criminals choose to point guns at police officers, they alone determine the outcome. The message is simple: if you engage in violence, my officers will defend themselves and the citizens of our beloved country,” he added.
The TTPS said it had “successfully” disrupted another organized home-invasion crew, less than a week after dismantling the “Tall Boots Crew” in Central Trinidad.
It said that this development was a direct result of swift investigative work and coordinated operational action across multiple units.
The police said that in the latest incident, four masked men posing as customers descended upon the home of a 67yearold pensioner.
“The suspects, armed and disguised in coveralls and masks, forced their way into the residence, assaulted the victim, and robbed them before escaping in a grey Toyota Aqua,” the TTPS said, adding that officers responded immediately, processed the scene, and initiated intelligence-driven follow-up inquiries.
It said later in the night, officers of the Southern Division Task Force (SDTF), Southern Division Emergency Response and Tactical Unit (SDRETF), acted on credible intelligence that a group of men armed with illegal firearms was preparing to launch another home in Marabella, south of here.
Upon arrival, officers encountered approximately eight men gathered in a yard who, upon seeing the approaching law enforcement officers, attempted to flee into nearby bushes. During the pursuit, two armed suspects pointed firearms at officers, resulting in an armed confrontation and one of the suspects receiving fatal injuries. A revolver loaded with six rounds of .38 ammunition was recovered.”
The police said two additional suspects, ages 24 and 20, were also arrested at the scene, with a revolver, six rounds of ammunition, and a cellphone believed to have been stolen during an earlier home invasion.
