Former player supports move to bring in experienced coach

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Renowned cricket commentator Lester Cassimy has given the thumbs up to the recent move by Cricket West Indies (CWI) to appoint Ottis Gibson as a fast-bowling consultant.

CWI announced in April that Gibson had been given a one-year contract, with his first major assignment being a home series against Sri Lanka in June.

The 57-year-old Gibson previously served as West Indies head coach from 2010 to 2014 and also held senior coaching positions with England, Bangladesh, and South Africa.

Speaking during WESN TV’s Face of Sports program on Friday, Cassimy, a former Trinidad and Tobago youth player, said Gibson had proven he was qualified for the job.

“Ottis Gibson is definitely one of the best coaches right now in the world…No way you would be considered to coach an English team, but he coached England, and England rose. He went to South Africa, and they rose, their bowling improved, and everything improved.

“Everywhere Ottis Gibson went, there was an improvement, and there was success. Ottis Gibson, last year, was with Bravo with the Trinbago Knight Riders…they brought him there because of his knowledge, he was an all-rounder, and he is a genuine coach and obviously an intelligent fellow,” Cassimy said.

“Ottis Gibson is a soft eight, meaning that he can be a nine, which, if you do exams, is a distinction.”
