CRAWLEY, England, CMC – Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw found the back of the net for Manchester City, but it could not prevent them from going down 3-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Women’s Super League (WSL) here on Saturday.
The loss halted City’s bid to clinch their first WSL title in 10 years, although the table leaders can do so by winning their final two matches.
City knew an away victory would allow them to clinch the title without playing again if Arsenal dropped points against Leicester City on Wednesday.
The visitors started brightly with Kerolin’s fifth-minute opener giving them a 1-0 lead, but Madison Haley finished off a fine team move to bring Brighton level in first-half injury time.
Brighton turned the match on its head two minutes into the second half when Kiko Seike ran onto a Fran Kirby through ball and rifled a shot in at the near post.
The home side continued to threaten a shell-shocked City, and Haley headed in her second in the 65th minute after goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita parried her initial effort.
Shaw, the WSL’s leading scorer, then scored her 19th league goal of the season in the 86th minute to give City hope, but Brighton saw out just their second WSL victory over City in 15 attempts.
