Suriname's Staatsolie partners with Tax Department on new collaborative initiative

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – The state-owned Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V. says it has launched a three-year program aimed at strengthening the expertise of tax and customs officials in the oil and gas sector.

The initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the Tax Department, and both organizations have signed a cooperation document.

Staatsolie said that through the three-year Tax Department Capacity-Building Program, it is making a targeted contribution to strengthening government institutions, ensuring that tax revenues from oil and gas are managed with due care and deployed for the development of Suriname.

Suriname’s offshore oil and gas sector presents significant opportunities but also places high demands on the government. The sector is technically complex and rapidly developing. Accurate taxation and effective oversight, therefore, require up-to-date, specialized knowledge. This program helps better prepare the Tax Department and Customs for these challenges,” Staatsolie said.

It said that tax officials involved in the assessment and control of the oil and gas sector, as well as customs officials responsible for overseeing import and export flows within the sector, will receive training.

The program focuses on strengthening both knowledge and practical skills. It will be implemented in phases over three years. Activities will take place in Suriname and, where necessary, will be supplemented by international knowledge exchange.

“The Tax Department Capacity-Building Program is a project associated with Staatsolie’s 45th anniversary in December 2025, under the theme “Empowering communities and institutions,” it added.
