SCARBOROUGH, Tobago, CMC – Police say they have detained one person following the fatal jet ski crash at the Pigeon Point Heritage Park here, resulting in the death of a seven-year-old school child on Wednesday.
The authorities confirmed that the man is assisting their investigations into the death of Angelica Saydee Jogie, who died after she was struck by an out-of-control jet ski while bathing with relatives in a cordoned-off area of the beach on Wednesday evening.
Her father, Arnold Jogie, was also injured in the crash and is being treated overnight at the Scarborough General Hospital. The Jogie family from Barrackpore, Trinidad, had traveled to Tobago for the Easter vacation.
On Wednesday night, Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), Farley Augustine, had called on the operator of the jet ski who fled the scene after the crash to surrender to police.
“You should not be hiding …you need to say exactly what transpired and how the jet ski ended up in the zone designated for bathers,” he said.
“The police have confiscated the jet ski, and the police are looking for the operator of the jet ski who fled the scene at the time of the incident. We really wish that this was not the conversation we are having this evening,” Augustine said, adding that the child had been bathing with her parents and uncle inside an area designated for bathers and separated from watercraft.
“The jet ski collided with a family that included a mother, father, daughter, and uncle. As a result of the incident, we have the death of a young girl, seven years old. We want to express condolences to the Jogie family,” Augustine said, adding that investigators were examining whether proper safety systems and post-trauma protocols had been followed.
He said Pigeon Point Heritage Park would remain closed to facilitate investigations.
