Authorities have launched a probe after a protected ocelot was shot and severely wounded in Granville, Cedros, with the animal now fighting for survival under intensive veterinary care

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Ministry of Agriculture has launched an investigation after a protected ocelot was found shot and wounded in a forest on Sunday.

The animal, identified as an Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), a medium-sized spotted wild cat, was recovered by wildlife officials and transferred for veterinary treatment.

Authorities said the Ocelot is expected to remain under care for several weeks as it recovers from its injuries.

The ministry said the species is designated an Environmentally Sensitive Species (ESS) under the Environmental Management Act, granting it full legal protection from hunting, harm, or disturbance.

“As an apex predator, the ocelot plays a critical role in maintaining ecological balance by regulating prey populations,” the ministry said in a statement. “Any act that jeopardises the life or well-being of an Environmentally Sensitive Species undermines national conservation objectives and contravenes the law.”

Under the Environmental Management Act, harming an ESS carries a fine of TT$100,000 and up to two years’ imprisonment.

The ministry condemned the shooting and said it is working with the Forestry Division’s Wildlife Section and law enforcement authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and pursue appropriate legal action.

Officials also reminded hunters and other forest users that intentionally or recklessly harming protected wildlife is prohibited. The public was urged to familiarise themselves with the list of protected species, avoid disturbing wildlife encountered in forested areas, and report suspected violations to the Wildlife Section or the nearest police station.

The ministry said it will continue to monitor the animal’s recovery and remains committed to safeguarding the country’s Environmentally Sensitive Species.
