BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Election and police officers are among the special voters casting their ballots on Wednesday ahead of the February 11 general election, Supervisor of Elections Sherland Turton said.
A total of 96 candidates have been nominated to contest the snap general election that Prime Minister Mia Mottley of the ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) called for a second time, with at least one year remaining in her five-year term in office.
Mottley led the BLP to landslide 30-0 victories in both the 2018 and 2022 general elections, defeating the main opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP).
Apart from the two main political parties, voters will also have a choice of casting a ballot for candidates from the Friends of Democracy party and the People’s Coalition for Progress, an alliance of the Conservative Barbados Leadership Party, the United Progressive Party, and the New National Party.
The Bajan Free Party, Solutions Barbados, Barbados Sovereignty Party, Reform Barbados, and one independent candidate are also in the race.
Turton said voting on Wednesday will take place between 7.00 am and 5.00 pm (local time), and that registered electors are reminded to bring their identification card when attending polling stations where they are entitled to vote in the general election.
Turton has also advised electors to take their identification cards to polling stations, adding that older cards may be used even if issued more than 10 years ago.
Turton stressed, however, that any elector who does not have any of these documents is still entitled to vote and should attend the polling station.
