GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The 2025 Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) concluded on a thrilling note Sunday evening, with Suriname dethroning the host nation to seize the overall championship in a fiercely contested battle of regional athleticism.

Held in Georgetown from December 5-7, the three-nation showdown saw Suriname accumulate 83 points across swimming, volleyball, chess, athletics, basketball, and Futsal.

Guyana mounted a vigorous defence of home turf, finishing a competitive second with 75 points, while French Guiana trailed closely in third with 73 points.

The Surinamese victory was built on dominant performances in the pool and on the volleyball court, complemented by consistent strength across all other disciplines.

Officials praised the delegation’s undeniable fighting spirit, teamwork, and perseverance, which translated into gold-medal form over the three-day spectacle.

“The greatest showpiece of these Games was the unity displayed,” stated Steven Jacobs, Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, during the closing ceremony.

“IGG was nothing short of spectacular.” He applauded the student-athletes and highlighted the National Sports Commission’s success in managing the event and in strengthening regional partnerships.

Despite ceding the overall title, Team Guyana celebrated commanding victories in key areas, reasserting its regional dominance.

As expected, Guyana claimed the overall Track and Field title with a monumental points haul. The hosts celebrated individual stardom, with Quinyla Burnette named Female Champion Athlete, while Ebo McNeil and Kaidon Persaud shared the Male Champion Athlete honour. Guyana also secured the overall Chess title and achieved a historic Futsal victory.

Looking ahead, Minister Jacobs challenged all competitors to deepen their knowledge in the “science of the sport” to reach even greater heights.

The baton has now officially been passed, with Suriname confirmed as the host nation for the 2026 Inter-Guiana Games, where they will aim to defend their hard-won crown on home soil.
