Jamaican police have formally charged a father with the murder of his teenage daughter following a domestic investigation.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Police have charged the father of a teenage girl with her murder after her body was found in a burnt-out refrigerator, less than four days after she had been reported missing on October 6 this year.

The police said that Lawrence Sergeant, 46, who has been in custody for weeks, was charged on Wednesday, and a date for his court appearance is being finalised.

He was arrested in Old Harbour, St Catherine, four days after the charred remains of his 13-year-old daughter were found behind their home. A post-mortem confirmed that Shantina died from blunt force trauma.

Police said then that Santina Sergeant, a student of the Christiana High School, had been reported missing and that officers, while searching the area, stumbled upon the body in an advanced state of decomposition.

She had been reported missing by her father.
