Opposition party in Jamaica unveils lineup for its new shadow cabinet

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The leader of the main opposition People’s National Party (PNP), Mark Golding, announced the composition of his Shadow Cabinet on Monday, less than a month after the Party was defeated in the September 3 general election.

In a statement, the PNP said that the team of spokespersons and deputies will provide oversight, hold the Government accountable, and present alternative policies that reflect the Party’s vision for a just, inclusive, and progressive Jamaica.

“In unveiling this Shadow Cabinet, we present a team of bright minds, experienced leaders, and energetic new voices who are ready to serve the people of Jamaica,” said Golding, who is also the president of the PNP.

“Together, they bring the creativity and determination required to chart a better course for our country,” Golding said, indicating that the Shadow Cabinet bears no cost to taxpayers.

“This is not about salaries or perks. Our Spokespersons serve without pay in these roles. The Shadow Cabinet provides a platform for MPs to engage meaningfully on national issues and demonstrate their readiness to assume responsibility in a future government,” he said.

The PNP stated that the Shadow Cabinet has been organized around four key pillars of national life: economic development, human development, physical development, and governance, ensuring a structured approach to addressing Jamaica’s most pressing challenges.

“The Party reaffirms its commitment to advancing people-centred policies that promote equity, sustainability, and national development. The Shadow Cabinet will continue to articulate and defend this vision while ensuring accountability in governance,” the PNP said in its statement.

According to the Party, Golding will have responsibility for matters of defence and constitutional affairs, while Julian Johnson will head the team dealing with finance and the public service. Phillip Paulwell will head the team dealing with energy and telecommunications, and Peter Bunting will head the team dealing with productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness.

The spokespersons on agriculture, fisheries, and food security are Dr. Dayton Campbell and Anthony Hylton. Anthony Hylton will serve as the spokesman for trade, industry, and global logistics, and Fitz Johnson will be the spokesman for national security.
