Guyana government welcomes progress on gas-to-energy project
The Guyana government has expressed satisfaction with the steady progress of its flagship gas-to-energy project.

The project is reported to be approximately 68 percent complete, with the contractor, Lindsayca, indicating that construction has commenced for several units to house an additional 400 workers who will operate on 12-hour shifts.

A significant part of this initiative is the power plant, which will use natural gas to generate electricity. Upon completion, it will deliver 300 megawatts (MW) of power to Guyanese countrywide. The power plant is approximately 74 percent complete.

Indar said that the completion of the project is a campaign promise, and remains “on top of the priority list” for the re-elected Irfaan Ali government.

“Our government has put in our manifesto that the electricity price has to be cut in half. This is how important this plant is to us,” he added.

The government stated that the introduction of the project will lay the foundation for an industrial transformation in Guyana, and that lands have already been designated for a fertiliser plant, a glass factory, and a data centre.

Last week President Ali said that he had received an updated report on the project from the head of the GTE Task Force, Winston Brassington, and that in Phase I, which includes the 300-megawatt (MW) combined cycle power plant and natural gas liquids (NGL) facilities being developed by Lindsayca Guyana Inc., the first gas turbine foundation will be poured on Tuesday night.

The report noted that Phase II of the project, which envisions a second 300 MW plant and an additional NGL facility, is also progressing.
