GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Police are investigating the circumstances that led to a 36-year-old woman being killed by her husband, who later committed suicide by drinking Gramoxone on Sunday.

In a statement, the police said that the domestic worker/vendor, Alisha ‘Tito’ Narine, was killed by her husband, identified as Ram Singh, at Vishal Singh Sawmill Compound, Crabwood Creek in Berbice, and that the two, the parents of two children, have had domestic problems for at least 15 years..

They had also appeared before the court.

Police said that they were alerted to the crime when Felisha Narine, the 18-year-old daughter of the victim, said she had received a call from her neighbour informing her of the situation.

“She then took a taxi to the Vishal Singh Sawmill Compound, where she observed her mother’s body lying motionless with apparent chop wounds to the left foot and right hand. She subsequently proceeded to Springlands Police Station and reported the matter,” the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said in the statement.

It said that on arrival at the scene, the police observed that the body of the deceased was lying in the compound, behind a heap of stones. The right foot, just below the knee, was almost severed, with additional injuries to the right shoulder and left hand, police added.

Investigators said the husband was found about 360 feet away in a sideline trench, under a tree. He was suspected of having consumed a poisonous substance.

They said he was informed of the allegation, arrested, cautioned, and escorted to the Village Regional Hospital, where he died.
