PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – Police have confirmed that former minister of natural resources, Regillio Dodson, is assisting their investigations into a shooting incident in the capital, Paramaribo, on Tuesday.
Dodson is suspected of attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, aggravated assault, and violating the Firearms Act. According to police, he fired several shots after recognizing a man whom he said had robbed him last year.
During the chase, a scuffle broke out, during which Dodson’s firearm discharged twice. He said that the bullets hit no one and that he was the victim of threats. According to Dodson, he acted in self-defense because the man allegedly threatened to kill him.
Police have confiscated his weapon, and the investigation has been transferred to the Major Crimes Department, which is continuing to handle the case together with the Public Prosecution Service.
