UNITED NATIONS, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has welcomed the election of St. Kitts-Nevis to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). According to the United Nations, ECOSOC brings people and issues together to promote collective action for a sustainable world.

“At the center of the UN development system, we conduct cutting-edge analysis, agree on global norms, and advocate for progress. Our collective solutions advance sustainable development,” it said.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country was among 18 countries elected for the term 2026-2028, which promises to be active as the global community races to inject momentum into the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a shared blueprint adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. It aims to secure the rights and well-being of everyone on a healthy, thriving planet through 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“ I extend congratulations to Foreign Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mutryce Williams, Elections Officer Minister Counselor Eustace T. Wallace, and the entire team at the Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations for their strategic foresight and yeoman effort in advancing this candidature to put St. Kitts and Nevis in the arena of debate, decision making, and positive change as we craft partnerships for impact across the United Nations and with our diplomatic and development partners,” Prime Minister Drew said.

Foreign Minister Douglas has expressed “complete confidence in the value that St. Kitts and Nevis and this government will bring to its membership of this critical UN organ.

We, in St. Kitts and Nevis, have a clear vision, and the United Nations is at the heart of our multilateral action as we scale up and secure new partnerships for a new era of diplomacy,” he added.

Ambassador Williams said the determination and strategic thought that underpinned the candidature and reminded that an elevated voice at the UN brings with it direct benefits for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“As we prepare to celebrate 42 years of Independence, this election has special meaning for it illustrates a nation on the move, a nation that has a story to tell the world, and a nation confident to assume leadership no matter how grand the stage,” the diplomat added.
