CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC—Prime Minister Phillip J Pierre will present an EC$2.057 billion (One EC dollar = 0.37 cents) budget to Parliament on Tuesday, saying it will focus on infrastructure development, healthcare, citizen security, economic stabilization, social development, and job creation.

The fiscal package will be the biggest in the island’s history. The presentation will follow the ceremonial opening of the new parliamentary session, during which the Governor General, Sir Errol Charles, will deliver the traditional throne speech.

Last year, Prime Minister Pierre presented an EC$1.89 billion budget, with $1.502 billion allocated to recurrent expenditures and $298.9 million to capital expenditures.

“This year’s budget will focus on infrastructure development, healthcare, citizen security, economic stabilization, social development, and job creation. The Prime Minister is also expected to highlight several key achievements of the past fiscal year, including a record-low unemployment rate of 10.8 percent in the last year, three years of primary surplus, and four consecutive years of economic growth above three percent,” a government statement said.

It said the two-debate on the fiscal package will begin on Thursday.
