GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC—Amna Ally, former general secretary of the primary opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), has resigned, claiming that women are no longer respected.

“The continuous disregard for women, who are the backbone of this great party, has been overwhelming,” she wrote in her resignation letter.

“I cannot support a party which disrespects the role played by women who have always been the backbone of the PNCR,” said Ally, whose resignation stemmed from an alleged “curse out” of another member, Vanessa Kissoon, who has since resigned from the party.

Ally said she called upon the PNCR and Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton and those close to him in the central executive to resign and save the party.

“However, since that group now operates as if they own the party founded and excellently led by Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, I have no hesitation, among deep hurt and regret, to tender my resignation and to call on all right-thinking women in the Party to stand up to this new tyrant,” said Ally, who was a PNCR member for more than 50 years.

However, PNCR general secretary Sherwin Benjamin said he does not believe Ally’s resignation would adversely affect the party.

“The resignation will have zero impact on the party. She has been absent since 2021 after the leader won the internal elections. The public has seen what she attempted to do during the party’s internal elections in 2024. And now, a resignation leaked to the news before coming to the party,” he said.

The PNCR is expected to lead an opposition coalition into the next regional and general election, which is scheduled for later this year.
