PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC—Curacao Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas is in Suriname on a five-day visit as a special guest of the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which is celebrating its 49th year of political independence on Monday.

A government statement said that Pisas, who was met on arrival here late Saturday by Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation Minister Albert Ramdin, is being accompanied by a business delegation to discuss energy generation projects and developments in the tourism sector.

It said the Prime Minister’s visit is taking place at the invitation of President Chan Santokhi, who paid a working visit to Curaçao earlier this year.

Since his arrival, Prime Minister Pisas has met with President Santokhi. According to the government statement, during the discussions, the leaders emphasized the mutual benefits of economic cooperation and trade.

It said with the growing tourism sector in Curaçao comes an increasing demand for fresh food products. Suriname can meet this demand by exporting vegetables, fruits, and wood products like doors and window frames.

“Curaçao’s growing tourism sector requires innovative solutions to meet the increasing demand for food and other products. Suriname can play an important role in this, which simultaneously creates new economic opportunities for our entrepreneurs,” said Ramdin, underscoring the strategic importance of this cooperation.

“Suriname has natural resources and a unique ecotourism appeal, while Curaçao has experience in the hospitality sector and offers access to various tourist markets,” the minister emphasized. He further indicated that by bundling, the region can be placed on the international map as a versatile and attractive destination.”

Prime Minister Pisas expressed enthusiasm about the possibilities discussed and indicated that this cooperation goes beyond economic benefits.

“By importing Surinamese products, we not only strengthen our tourism sector but also contribute to sustainable economic growth on both sides,” he said, adding that this partnership offers tangible results that will directly improve the population’s living standards.

“Our relationship is built on a shared history that connects us, and strengthening this bond forms the basis for a shared future. We build on this solid foundation to create new opportunities for our people,” Pisas added.

He will also meet with the business community and travel to the interior before his departure on Wednesday.
