PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – The weapon belonging to a member of the coalition government in Suriname has been seized by the authorities after he fired several shots at his mobile phone over the last weekend.

Fogatie Aserie, 60, a member of the ABOP party, was filmed on Saturday as he stopped his car along the East-West link in the north of the country, got out, and threw his mobile phone on the ground. In the video that was shared on social media, he is then seen pulling out his handgun and opening fire at the phone.

Media reports said that Aserie had received a call from a woman while his wife was sitting next to him. He stopped along the road and fired his Glock pistol at his cell phone, which was later found on the scene by the police, along with seven shell casings.

Police said that neighbors alerted them to the incident, and based on the description, they could trace the Parliamentarian to his house in Paramaribo.

He told police that he had been driving towards the capital with his wife when his phone rang. To prevent her from finding out who had called him, he got out of the vehicle and shot up the phone.

Aerie was allowed to return home after being questioned by the police. However, police said the gun was confiscated, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered the seizure.
