GENEVA, CMC– The United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland, says the new Permanent Representative of Guyana, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, presented his credentials to Director-General Tatiana Valovaya on Wednesday.
The UN Office said that before his appointment, Ramsammy served as an advisor to the Minister of Health of Guyana and concurrently chaired the Presidential Commission on Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Disease since 2020.
Ramsammy also served as chair of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation since 2022. In addition, the UN Office in Geneva said Ramsammy was Minister of Agriculture of Guyana from 2011 to 2015 and Minister of Health from 2001 to 2011.
Dr. Ramsammy’s extensive experience in public health is a testament to his capabilities. He has been chairman of the Executive Board of the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS, the Caribbean Community’s Council for Human and Social Development, and the Caribbean Public Health Agency.
The UN Office in Geneva said Ramsammy was chairman of the Global Fund for Affordable Medicines for Malaria between 2010 and 2011 and president of the World Health Organization’s 61st World Assembly (2008-2009).
Dr. Ramsammy’s educational background is impressive. He holds a Ph. D. degree from St. John’s University in Queens, New York (1982), a master’s degree from the same University (1979), and a bachelor’s degree from Pace University in New York (1977).
The UN Office in Geneva said Dr. Ramsammy was a Menschel Fellow at the prestigious Harvard School of Public Health in Massachusetts in 2015.
