BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Shridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade Law, Policy and Services of the University of the West Indies (UWI) to further trade-related research and cooperation.

The MOU was signed by Professor Clive Landis, principal of UWI Cave Hill Campus, and Pedro Manuel Moreno, UNCTAD’s deputy secretary general.

Building on a robust foundation of nearly two decades of collaboration, the recent Global Supply Chain Forum held in Barbados in May has paved the way for a new chapter in the partnership between the regional tertiary institution and UNCTAD. This partnership, which has seen students’ annual visits to Geneva, is now set to expand its horizons.

Under the new partnership, the focus will be on joint research, particularly in the areas of the blue and green economy. This research will be built on the Villars Framework, a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development, and will be supported by trade-related data and analysis.

Principal Landis praised the collaboration and said it was an input into the ongoing work on ‘remaking trade’ under the Villars Framework. In contrast, Moreno said the MOU represents a continuation of the long collaboration between UN Trade and Development and the Caribbean.

The Shridath Ramphal Centre’s MITP Programme students have been in Geneva for two weeks as part of the Joint University Study Tour. They have visited international organizations, CARICOM embassies and missions, and private sector entities to get a first-hand view of how trade practitioners from various fields and institutions undertake their tasks and implement trade policy.
