CRICKET-LEAD Holder, Warrican set up easy Pride win

CRICKETSPANISH TOWN, Jamaica, CMC – Spinners Chaim Holder and Jomel Warrican combined to spin Barbados Pride to an emphatic nine-wicket win over Combined Campuses and Colleges on the final day of their first-round West Indies Championship match here Saturday.

Holder, a 29-year-old off-spinner, claimed five for 69 – his second five-wicket haul in first-class cricket – while left-arm spinner Warrican picked up three for 16, as CCC were dismissed for 193 after resuming the morning on 96 for two in their second innings.

Set 35 to win. Pride needed only 28 balls to reach their target, Zachary McCaskie punching a 14-ball unbeaten 28 decorated with five fours.

Resuming the morning at Chedwin Park still 55 runs in arrears after being forced to follow on by 151 runs the previous evening, CCC got a top score of 72 from Test stroke-maker Shamarh Brooks and 47 from debutant Demario Richards, but the remainder of the batting collapsed.

Pride struck in the day’s second over when Shatrughan Rambaran (23), unbeaten on 15 at the start, played back and lost his off-stump to Holder after stretching his overnight third wicket stand with Brooks to 53.

And when captain Jonathan Carter (1) steered the ninth delivery he faced into the hands of Akeem Jordan at first slip off fast bowler Chemar Holder, CCC had slipped even further to 116 for four.

Pride was then held up by a fifth wicket partnership of 27 between Brooks and Richards, and CCC appeared set to end the first hour without further loss when Brooks was lbw playing back to Holder on the stroke of the drinks break.

Brooks, unbeaten on 44 overnight, faced 134 balls and struck seven fours.

Left to carry the fight for CCC, the left-handed Richards struck a half-dozen fours in an 82-ball knock, but wickets continued to tumble around him as Warrican weighed in with three quick scalps.

Richards was eventually last out, bowled, missing a heave to give Holder his fifth wicket of the innings. LEAD Holder, Warrican, set up an easy Pride win.
