JAMAICA-Candidates being nominated ahead of Feb. 26 Local Government election

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC -The nomination of candidates ahead of the Local Government election scheduled for February 26 is on Thursday.

Nominations started at 10 a.m. and went to 2 p.m. (local time) at designated centers across the 63 constituencies.

According to officials from the two major political parties, the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the main opposition People’s National Party, all candidates are ready to be nominated.

JLP Deputy General Secretary Richard Creary has expressed confidence that the party will win most municipalities by February 26.

“We plan to maintain everything we already have and are going after every other corporation. Some I think we have an outstanding chance, but I believe we have a chance in all.”

Meanwhile, PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell consulted with parish managers to ensure everything runs smoothly today.

“All the candidates have met the EOJ (Electoral Office of Jamaica) officers, and they have set their time to be nominated. They have made their plans for their mobilization, and we expect tomorrow to be an excellent showing for the party across the length and breadth of Jamaica,” he said in an interview with Radio Jamaica News.

Two hundred twenty-eight electoral divisions are being contested to elect councilors to serve in the 13 Municipal Corporations.

The Mayor of the Municipality of Portmore in the central parish of St. Catherine will be directly elected.
