NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander says there is a need for a re-evaluation of the strategies to deal with crime in the Bahamas as the country records more than 100 murders this year.
Fernander, who had earlier this year said that his goal was to keep murders below 100, told reporters that where there were fewer murders this year than last year, “you set your goals and you try to achieve it,
“We now need to go back to the table and see where we could strategize and do some things differently,” he said, as the country so far recorded 107 murders this year.
“We finished with 128 last year, so we are still down. One murder is too much, and that still concerns me, and we will continue to do our due diligence to serve the Bahamian people,” Fernander told reporters, describing the last weekend as “rough,” with police responding to numerous crime scenes, including five murders.
He said police saw no connection among the murder incidents, urging parents also to keep tabs on their children.
“And some of the parents who’ve seen the video know that that’s their child and should contact the police. And we will not let those kids disrupt family orientation events like the Carnival and Junkanoo,” he said, referring to an online video showing a group of boys fighting at Carnival.
