ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has confirmed that there will be a cabinet reshuffle in the new year.
“Yes…You will know more when the time comes,” he said 18 months after he led the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to victory in the June 23 general elections last year. The party won nine of the 15 seats.
The NDC defeated the New National Party (NNP) headed by Dr. Keith Mitchell, who had won the previous two general elections by winning all 15 seats in the Parliament.
Prime Minister Mitchell, also the Minister for Information, still needs to reveal how soon, in the new year, Governor General Dame Cecile La Grenade will be swearing in ministers to the new ministerial portfolios.
In April, Mitchell gave up the Ministry of Finance portfolio to Dennis Cornwall, taking up Cornwall’s ministerial portfolio of Infrastructure and Physical Development, Public Utilities, Civil Aviation, and Transportation.
Mitchell said then that the move was aimed at allowing him to get the opportunity to cross-learn and cross-train in different government ministries because his only experience within the public service system had been working for two years as a teacher in a secondary school more than two decades ago.
He also said that there will be a review of government ministers’ performances in the future and the possibility of a reshuffle.
“As you know, we are new ministers sitting in government. We have never been a minister before, and we think it is crucial from as early as possible to give our ministers, including myself, the opportunity, if the need arises, to be able to be cross-trained and to cross-learn the various ministries that we function,” he said said.
