LONDON, CMC – Reigning world champions England have appointed former West Indies white-ball captain Kieron Pollard to the England coaching staff for the ICC Men’s Twenty20 International World Cup next June in the West Indies and United States.

According to an ECB media release on Sunday, Pollard will join the team specifically for the T20 World Cup as an assistant coach and to provide expertise on local conditions.

England team managing director Robert Key said the side could have benefitted from a coach with “local knowledge” after their disastrous defense of the title at the ICC Men’s One-day International World Cup this past November in India, and the decision to appoint Powell will be in keeping with that sentiment.

The appointment of Pollard comes a few days after England stumbled to a 3-2 series loss after West Indies beat them in the deciding fifth T20I this past Thursday at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad.

Pollard, who played 123 ODIs and 101 T20Is for West Indies, was a part of Darren Sammy’s side that won the 2012 T20I World Cup.

He has vast experience in the format, having played close to 650 official matches, and is still an active player in T20 franchise cricket.

He recently captained the New York Strikers to victory in the Abu Dhabi Ten10 League and the Trinbago Knight Riders to the final of the CPL earlier this year.

He will lead MI Emirates in the ILT20 next month in Dubai and is currently the batting coach for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.
