SURINAME-Suriname and India sign MoU on agriculture.

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – Suriname and India have signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop further the agricultural sector in the Ducth-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.

The agreement was signed by the Indian President, Draupadi Murmu, who is ending an official visit here, and President Chan Santokhi.

The 2023-27 agreement covers cooperation in agriculture and related sectors. It will focus on exchanging information and expertise on agricultural extension and innovative extension methods, public-private partnerships, agricultural mechanization, modernization of slaughterhouses, food processing technology, creation and expansion of food testing laboratories, and soil and water management.

Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Parmanand Sewdien, who signed the agreement, said the partnership would bring many benefits and tangible results, such as exchanging knowledge and technology to Suriname.

The ministry also said that Suriname would benefit from India’s expertise and experience, leading to increased productivity, efficient resource management, and improved agricultural practices.

Sewdien said another expected benefit of the collaboration is improved food security. He said by working together in agriculture, Suriname can more effectively tackle the challenge of food security, sharing expertise and resources to optimize production and diversify the farming community.

The authorities said that the cooperation between the two countries in agriculture would create new economic opportunities, resulting in trade opportunities and foreign exchange income.
