LUCKNOW, India, CMC – West Indies left-handers Nicholas Pooran and Kyle Mayers failed to spark. Still, the rain had the final say, forcing a disappointing no-result against Chennai Super Kings and halting Lucknow Super Giants’ bid for the top spot in the Indian Premier League standings here Wednesday.

Playing at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Super Giants had reached a paltry 125 for seven with four deliveries left in the innings when lousy weather ended the contest prematurely.

With a point awarded to each team, Super Giants moved into second place on 11 points, a point adrift of Alzarri Joseph’s Gujarat Titans, while CSK also moved to 11 points but third based on an inferior net run rate.

Sent in, Super Giants needed Ayush Badoni’s 33-ball unbeaten 59 at number seven to get up to their eventual total after the innings lay in ruins at 44 or five in the 10th over.

Badoni, a 23-year-old right-hander, struck two fours and four sixes as he put on 59 for the sixth wicket with Pooran, who made a slow, boundary-less 20 off 31 balls before holing out to cover in the 18th over from 20-year-old seamer Matheesha Pathirana (2-22).

Earlier, Mayers had made 14 from 17 balls with two fours before becoming the first casualty of the innings, picking out long off with England off-spinner Moeen Ali (2-13) in the fourth over.

His dismissal triggered a slide that saw Super Giants lose five wickets for 26 runs in 37 deliveries.
