KINGSTON, Jamaica– Police are continuing their investigations into the fatal shooting of a ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) member on Thursday amid suggestions that it may have been a contract killing.

“It is still very early, but from the men’s modus operandi, it seems to be that the individual was deliberately targeted, and this would fit into something of a contract hit,” said the Commanding Officer for the St Andrew South Police Division, Superintendent Kirk Ricketts.

Police said JLP councilor Lennox Hines, a motor vehicle examiner, was killed under a bridge on Thursday evening, his murder causing significant traffic disruption.

Superintendent Ricketts said that Hines was traveling home from work accompanied by his daughter and another female co-worker “when on reaching this intersection they were attacked by men riding on a motorcycle.”

The police said apart from Hines, one of the passengers in the car was also injured.

In 2007, Hines was charged by police with murder following the killing of a man and injuring two other people during the run-up to the 2007 General Elections.
