Skerrit to seek re-election of ruling party in Dominica.
ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says he will stand for re-election as leader of the ruling Dominica Labor Party (DLP) when it holds its delegates conference in Grand Bay, south of here, next month.
Skerrit, who has been prime minister since January 8, 2004, said that the delegates conference will be held on November 22 this year.
He said a resolution adopted by the party had indicated that “all positions are available for contests, even if the constitution says that when certain positions are filled, it is done so for three years.
“So in the case of leadership or the leader of the party, when there’s a delegates conference, and someone gets elected as leader, you’re in office for three years, and the last delegates conference we held was in 2024,” Skerrit said on the state-owned DBS Radio.
He said the DLP’s national council has passed a resolution that all such positions have become vacant and will be available for contests at the next delegates conference.
“So the position of leader, deputy political leader, president, general secretary, these crucial positions certainly will all be open for contests,” Skerrit said.
“I will say that certainly I will put my name for contests in this party, and we will see what happens on November 22,” said Skerrit, who was first elected DLP leader in February 2004, shortly after becoming prime minister following the death of then prime minister and party leader, Pierre Charles.
