LONDON, CMC – Walsall’s Montserrat international Donervon Daniels has won the League Two goal-of-the-month award for January for his strike against Sutton.
The 30-year-old center-back, not renowned for finishing, produced a brilliant strike after beating two markers and curling his volley into the top corner.
His 18th-minute strike was canceled out five minutes later as Walsall went on to earn a 1-1 draw against the visitors from south London.
“I am thrilled to have won this award. The other goals that were up for the award were also fantastic strikes, but it’s nice to be recognized for my goal,” said Daniels, who has scored once in three appearances for Montserrat.
“It was my first goal at the Poundland Bescot Stadium, an extraordinary moment.
“It was a good team move that started on one side of the pitch and was finished on the other with some excellent play between Liam Gordon, Jack Earing, and me.
“Knowing that the supporters have voted for it now makes it even more special.”
Daniels beat out competition from Wrexham’s Paul Mullin, Harrogate Town’s Abraham Odoh, and Colchester United’s Arthur Read.
His goal has been his only strike this season, the six-foot one-inch having been a fixture in Walsall’s side with 35 appearances during the current campaign.
“The center-back showed attacking movement an inform striker would be proud of, running on to a layoff before skipping past two defenders and rifling a shot into the top corner,” said goal-of-the-month judge Don Goodman.
Walsall has played for clubs like West Bromwich Albion, Wigan Athletic, and Blackpool.
