Venezuelan soldier shot and injured in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Police said that a Venezuelan soldier was shot and injured at Imbotero, North West District, on Saturday by two Venezuelan nationals who escaped to the South American country after the incident.

“The suspects fled the scene and escaped over the border into Venezuela, after being pursued by ranks from the GPF (Guyana Police Force),” according to a police statement issued here. Imbotero is near the Guyana-Venezuela border.

The police gave no further details regarding the shooting, including the name of the Venezuelan soldier and the purpose of his visit here. They have, however, named the suspected shooters “Freddy” and Kendell.”

But the soldier, who was shot twice, has been taken to the Mabaruma Hospital, where police said he was being treated and his condition was listed as stable.

Media reports indicate that the two suspects and the victim had a prior misunderstanding that resulted in an altercation on Saturday.

Guyana and Venezuela have a long-standing border dispute with the matter before the International Court of Justice (ICJ)  Caracas, which is not participating in the matter before the ICJ, claims a significant portion of the country.
