PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Elections and Boundaries Commission (the Commission) says it has been made aware of a falsified document currently in circulation that inaccurately claims affiliations between its chief election officer (CEO) and several Returning Officers with a political party.

“These unfounded assertions seriously misrepresent the truth and directly threaten the integrity of the electoral process and the forthcoming Parliamentary Elections scheduled for Monday, April 28, 2025,” the Commission said.

“The Commission categorically rejects and unequivocally condemns these baseless claims. We reaffirm that both the CEO and all Returning Officers remain fully committed to the principles of impartiality, professionalism, and the democratic values that are the foundation of our institution,” it added.

The Commission said the “deliberate dissemination of misinformation of this nature is deeply concerning as it undermines public confidence and risks eroding the democratic fabric we are entrusted to protect.

“Consequently, this matter has been formally referred to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service for a thorough investigation.”

The Commission said it “respectfully” urges all citizens to exercise discernment by relying solely on credible and verified sources for information.

“It is essential to disregard unsubstantiated or misleading content as we collectively strive to preserve the integrity of the electoral process.

“As always, the Commission upholds transparency, fairness, and public trust. We are grateful for the continued confidence of our stakeholders and the public, and we remain committed to addressing this matter with the seriousness it demands.”

Teams from the Commonwealth and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will observe Monday’s general election.

One hundred sixty-one candidates representing 17 political parties and three independents are contesting the election Prime Minister Stuart Young called less than four months before the second anniversary of the incumbent People’s National Movement (PNM) ‘s 2025 electoral victory.

As it has been on past occasions, the party’s main challenge will come from the main opposition, the United National Congress (UNC), which has allied with several smaller parties and trade unions to contest the 41 seats in the election.
