PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC—Police Commissioner Bryan Isaacs has offered “sincere “apologies to the country for what he termed the police actions towards members of Suriname’s society.

“I can tell you that the Suriname Police Force has served society in many ways. Yes, it can; it must be much better, and we can do so. The police actions toward society have not always been pure, and the treatment of society has not always been correct.

“And that is why I offer my sincere apologies, also on behalf of the Suriname Police Force, to everyone who has been affected by incorrect actions by the police,” Isaacs said in a statement.

Isaac, addressing the force’s annual closing ceremony at the Police Academy, acknowledged that members of society have made many complaints regarding the police’s actions.

He said that some actions have also been recorded, and at other times, the police force has had to endure negative news coverage due to internal issues.

But Isaacs said that some members of the force had been disciplined, including 154 who appeared on the force report of mandatory hearings, 24 who were suspended or removed from office, 38 who were arrested, and 21 who were detained.

He said the most common forms of dereliction of duty that officers are guilty of are unlawful absence, violence, and committing criminal acts, such as accepting gifts and promises and extortion.

Justice and Police Minister Kenneth Amoksi told Isaac, “It is good that you have also apologized to the community.

“Wherever work is done, mistakes are indeed made. But that is why there is an integrity policy. You must indeed remove people who deliberately make mistakes and corrupt people from your force.

“We do not need those people. However difficult it is for everyone in Suriname, you must respect and promote law and order. There are no concessions on that. We cannot implement a laissez faire policy,” he added.

Isaacs is convinced that with the management team’s commitment, “the right prioritization, and above all decisive leadership, we will move towards better.”

“That process has already been initiated and will be continued in the coming year. We will continue to pursue our mission, namely, striving for sustainable policing on the entire territory of the Republic of Suriname and protecting the rule of law in all its facets.

“And this, this is, a historic assignment to the Suriname Police Force, so that no one, I repeat no one, is above the law and impunity in a constitutional state can never be propagated,” Isaac added.
