CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre on Sunday sent condolences to the family of three people who were gunned down late Saturday as the southern town of Vieux Fort continues to grapple with an upsurge in crime and violence.
According to police reports, one man was gunned down in the community of Cedar Heights, and shortly after, a grandmother and her two-year-old grandson were murdered in the town of Vieux Fort.
In a statement on social media, Prime Minister Pierre, also responsible for National Security, bemoaned the homicides.
“My brothers and sisters, today we commemorate the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. It is a day of hope and renewal that reminds us of the power of love and forgiveness,” said Pierre, the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Castries East.
As we celebrate this sacred day, we are reminded of the devastating impact of gun violence on our communities. My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of those killed during last night’s heart-aching homicides. Their pain is unimaginable and in our thoughts and prayers,” he said.
“As we mourn this tragedy, we must not cower to these monsters. We must come together as a nation to address these senseless reprisal killings.”
The Prime Minister said that the killings do not bring justice or resolution to any situation but only cause more pain and suffering for all involved.
He urged citizens to work with the police and local organizations to share information that will keep communities safe.
“On this resurrection, Sunday, let us remember the power of love and forgiveness and commit ourselves to create a safer and more peaceful country for all,” he stated.
