ST KITTS-Government launches taskforce

BASSETERRE, St Kitts, CMC: The government of St. Kitts and Nevis has launched a Youth Unemployment Taskforce aimed at delving into the intricacies of the unemployment issues here, and a crucial function of the task force would be to conduct an “employment rapid survey” designed to “uncovering the root causes of youth unemployment, and determining whether factors such as race or education levels play significant roles.”

Director of Youth Empowerment, Sahira Joseph, said the hope is that the results of the survey would help the Ministry of Youth Empowerment in collaboration with other government agencies such as the Labour Department, Social and Community Development, and Skills Training and Empowerment Programme (STEP), to develop new and optimize existing programs to help youth access fulfilling jobs and careers.

Minister of State with responsibility for Youth Empowerment Isalean Phillip said the government intends to engage the private sector through the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in the initiative.

Speaking on the importance of the survey, Phillip said, “We recognize that we might not have all the data to forge the right path. However, the rapid assessment and our collective approach with various stakeholders will undoubtedly lead us in the right direction.”
