PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Test opened John Campbell perished agonizingly short of his second hundred of the season as Jamaica Scorpions easily repelled Guyana Harpy Eagles to draw their fourth-round match at the Diego Martin Complex.
Needing to erase the first deficit of 191 after Harpy Eagles declared Saturday on their overnight 584 for seven, Scorpions battled all day to frustrate Harpy Eagles, finishing on 271 for six.
The left-handed Campbell, already with a hundred against leaders Barbados Pride this season, was dismissed for 98 after facing 155 deliveries in the shade over three hours and striking 11 fours and a six.
His opening partner Leroy Lugg struck an aggressive 67 from 72 deliveries while Jermaine Blackwood chipped in with 28 and Paul Palmer and Alwyn Williams 26 apiece.
Left-arm spinners Veerasammy Permaul (3-61) and Gudakesh Motie (2-73) persevered, but Scorpions batted in partnerships to negate the possibility of collapse.
Campbell put on 105 for the first wicket with Lugg, the 25-year-old right-hander blasting five fours and half-dozen sixes before going bowled, playing back to Permaul.
Blackwood added a further 64 for the second wicket with Campbell, striking five fours off 58 balls but then lost concentration and lofted Motie to mid-on.
When Motie trapped Oraine Williams lbw for one at 175 for three, Harpy Eagles was sensing a flurry of wickets, but Campbell put on 32 for the fourth wicket with Palmer. The batter then added a further 41 for the fifth wicket with Alwyn Williams to stymie the efforts of the multiple times champions.
Campbell looked a sure bet to reach his seventh first-class hundred when he was fourth out, lbw missing a swing at a short ball from Permaul, which kept low.
