KINGSTON, Jamaica— The Ministry of Health and Wellness on Sunday announced that effective immediately, parents of children aged 12 and younger can access free medical care at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).

The ministry said the arrangement was made in response to the increase in viral illnesses and the resulting overcrowding at the Bustamante Hospital for Children, which is usually seen this year.

The UHWI is not a part of the public health system, which provides services without paying user fees.

“Children and the elderly are among the most vulnerable groups, especially at this time, as the flu and gastroenteritis season intensifies,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also reminded that only paracetamol should be taken in the event of illness and to visit the nearest health center if symptoms do not improve.
