KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) says all is in place for Nomination Day on Wednesday, ahead of the upcoming by-election in the constituency of North East St. Ann on September 30.
In a release on Monday, the EOJ said it is set to accept nominations from eligible candidates for the by-election.
Nominations will take place on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Office of the Returning Officer for the constituency in the northern parish.
The EOJ says political parties intending to contest the election must be registered with the Electoral Commission of Jamaica under the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act 2014.
Individuals wishing to contest the election who are not members of registered political parties may do so as independent candidates.
The main opposition party, the People’s National Party (PNP), will not contest the election; therefore, Matthew Samuda of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is expected to win.
The by-election is being held following the resignation of the former Member of Parliament, Marsha Smith.
