KINGSTON, Jamaica, Police say a 34-year-old man is assisting their investigations into the murder of a British national who was shot at a guesthouse in St. James, north-east of here on Monday.

Police have indemnified the victim as 33-year-old Sean Patterson, a personal trainer who resided in West London in Britain and who had arrived here on December 29.

Media reports said that Patterson was standing on the pool deck at a villa here on Monday when a man approached him with a handgun. The gunman reportedly chased Patterson and shot him multiple times.

The police said that Patterson was rushed to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Jamaica Gleaner newspaper reported that the 34-year-old suspect was allegedly deported from England in 2013.

Patterson is the first person to be murdered in St James since the start of the year. In 2022, St James recorded a total of 198 murders.

Jamaica recorded 1 498 murders last year, up from 1 474 the previous year.
