ALBERTA, Canada, CMC – Jockey Rasheed Hughes became just the second Barbadian to capture the jockeys’ title at Century Downs, and he did so in convincing fashion when the season ended over the weekend.
Hughes rode two winners on Sunday’s final day to end the season with 22 wins from 86 rides and earnings of CAN$245,908. He follows in the footsteps of Rico Walcott, who won a hat-trick of titles at Century Downs from 2017 to 2019.
Jose Asencio finished in second position with 16 wins from 72 mounts and earnings of CAN$222 608, while another Barbadian, N’Rico Prescod, ended the season with ten wins and winnings of CAN$158 823.
Hughes piloted Barak to victory in the opening race, going 1300 meters, with the four-year-old bay gelding crossing the finish line in 1:19.87.
He then returned aboard Moonshine Now in race seven, another 1300-metre sprint, to win in 1:19.74.
Prescod also tasted success in race two with BB’s Wildfire, the three-year-old brown filly taking victory in the 1300-metre Allowance Optional Claiming sprint in 1:19.97.
He also had a brace, guiding Tucker Time from the middle of the pack to win a 1400-metre dash in 1:26.22.
Fellow Barbadian Rashaun Griffith also rode a winner in Where’s The Gold, taking race three, which went 1700 meters in 1:48.71.
