CHARLES TOWN, West Virginia, CMC – Barbadian Reshawn Latchman and Andre Ramgeet, son of former Jamaica champion Andrew Ramgeet, each landed a win on the eight-race card on Saturday at the Charles Town racetrack in the United States.
Latchman fortified his hold on fourth in the jockeys’ standings with his 42nd win of the season when he brought back the highly favored Sommer Velvet from a 300-meter trip on the dirt track in one minute, 20.01 seconds.
The 4-5 favorite, Sommer Velvet, took over early in the race and moved to the inside to rate the pace before coming under pressure at the rail midway on the far turn, and Latchman got the four-year-old, dark bay filly to open up with only mild urging to win comfortably 5-1/2 lengths clear.
Earlier, Ramgeet moved into 13th when he got his 16th win of the season after the 23-1 outsider Rocket Appeal finished 1 300 meters on the dirt in 1 min, 19.58 secs.
Ramgeet raced Rocket Appeal with the pace three wide through the front stretch, then stalked and gave chase towards the seven-sixteenths pole before the six-year-old, dark bay gelding came into contention again on the far turn and dug in, leaving the turn, and got up in the final yards to finish half-length ahead.
