KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC—Jamaican trainer Jason DaCosta has achieved a remarkable milestone at Caymanas Park, securing his 300th win in just over three and a half years. DaCosta, who also trains horses in the United States and has over 400 winners to his name there, marked this local milestone in style.
The achievement came on Saturday, August 24, 2024, with DaCosta’s impressive three-year-old American-bred colt, ‘Funcaandun.’ The colt dominated the Distinctly Irish Trophy, a Graded Stakes/Open Allowance race for three-year-olds and older horses over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m).
Ridden by Tevin Foster, ‘Funcaandun’ delivered a thrilling performance, finishing two-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of current Horse of the Year ‘Atomica’ and former Horse of the Year ‘Further and Beyond,’ clocking in at 1:55.3.
DaCosta’s training philosophy is heavily influenced by the wisdom and expertise of his late father, the legendary Wayne DaCosta.
DaCosta saddled his first winner, ‘Elitist,’ on April 7, 2021.
