YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, CMC – Barbadian jockey Rocco Bowen tasted success last weekend when he combined with a 2-1 chance Fair and Square to win the US$100 000 Best of Ohio Endurance Stakes at Mahoning Valley.
Going a mile and fourth, Bowen and Fair and Square smashed the three-year-olds and upward by 7-¼ lengths, covering the trip in two minutes, 6:65 seconds.
Nine-to-one choice Tantrum finished second while 39-1 longshot Raven Moon ran on to be third.
The Best of Ohio Endurance was one of five added-money races on Saturday’s ten-race card in the US Midwest.
Bowen finished down the field aboard a 6-1 bet Sparkling Jewel in the $100 000 Best of Ohio Distaff Stakes in race six and one from last in the $100 000 Best of Ohio John W Galbreath Stakes in race seven with 25-1 longshot Gold Honey.
However, the 33-year-old Bowen finally reached the winners’ enclosure with Fair and Square in the evening’s final race.
Serve Revenge, the race’s longest shot at 93-1, made the early running with a 6-1 bet, I want to Win lying second, and Bowen stalked the pace from third as the field went through fractions of 23.41, 48.19, and 1:13.01 seconds.
Bowen then sent the three-year-old chestnut gelding to the front after six furlongs before pulling away in the stretch to leave his rivals with little chance.
