Homeowner shot and killed as bandits invade home

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Thursday morning, three people, including the homeowner, were killed during a shootout involving bandits in the upscale Westmoorings area west of here.

Three bandits had attempted to storm the house but were met by armed resistance, leading to the exchange of gunfire.

Police said of the three people killed, Nicole Moses, who resided at the house with her brother and mother.

Media reports said that Nicole was in the process of taking her nephew to school when the shooters attacked, with her brother, a licensed firearm holder, engaging them in the shootout.

Nicole was shot in the shoulder and chest during the crossfire and died later at a hospital.

Police said two of the attackers died at the scene, and the third is now under police guard at the hospital.

Meanwhile, police said that three men would appear in the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court on Thursday charged with a triple homicide that occurred on February 5 in Diego Martin, west of here.

The police said Odarie Portillo, 36, and his brother, Ojarie Portillo, 40, were each charged with three counts of murder, shooting with intent, possession of a firearm to endanger life, and control of ammunition to endanger life, following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC.

The third accused has been identified as 30-year-old Levi Joseph, charged with the same offenses as the brothers.

Police said that the three men shot and killed Kevin Kyle Spring, a form-two student of Tranquillity Government Secondary School, his cousin Joseph Spring and their friend Rondell John, on February 5. A fourth man, also Spring’s cousin Rawle Spring was injured during the shooting.

Relatives said that the teen wanted to become a mechanic and worked with his cousin to learn the trade.
