GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Nazima Raghubir was re-elected President of the Guyana Press Association (GPA), easily defeating her challenger, Neil Marks, on Sunday.

Raghubir, also the vice president of the regional umbrella group, the Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers (ACM), received 70 votes as against 25 for Marks, who, in the leadup, had complained about how the polls were being conducted.

On Saturday, a High Court judge threw out a motion to prevent the elections from taking place, saying “this application is not urgent” and that having read the constitution of the GPA, it is an entity that is “not a corporate or any kind of registered entity that has a personality that can sue or be sued.”

The judge said that the last executive, which includes Raghubir, “are private persons, who happen to be the executive of a private body. None of them is carrying out any administrative function or duty that allows for judicial review…none of them,” said Chief Justice, Roxane George.

Following the elections, Marks, a former GPA president, said, “To say I am severely disappointed in how the annual general meeting and elections of the Guyana Press Association were held …would be an understatement”.

He claimed that the voter’s list “was heavily padded.”

Members of the diplomatic community in Guyana observed the GPA election.

Besides Raghubir, the other elected members are Rawle Toney, Vice President, and Svetlana Marshall, Treasurer. And Ariana Gordon, the Secretary. They were elected unopposed.

The other executive members are Denis Chabrol, Alva Solomon, Iva Wharton, and Nyjel Fraser.
