GUYANA-PSC surveying complaints of unfair business practices

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC -The Private Sector Commission (PSC) is conducting a survey to determine whether locally owned businesses are disadvantaged by Chinese-owned companies selling goods and services at a cheaper price.

PSC Chairman Komal Singh says that while he does not believe that a prominent manufacturer’s “special” wholesale price offer to Chinese supermarkets was affecting local businesses, a survey is being conducted by PSC members “for them to give us feedback” regarding evidence of unfair competition.

“We want some evidence that they are having those challenges,” he said, adding the concerns raise issues such as the payment of taxes and undervaluing imports.

Chinese supermarkets are being established near well-established Guyanese-owned supermarkets and public markets. In many instances, they also sell hardware items. However, the PSC Chairman said new entrants to the market could not be regarded as unfair competition but as better competition for businesses and consumers.

“If somebody is offering a lower price to one of their clients because of volume purchase and those sort of stuff, I don’t think we, as the private sector, can control that,” he said, adding that the PSC would find it difficult to get into someone’s private business and discuss price setting.

Instead, Singh suggests that businesses that have a concern about unfair price setting by a group of businesses should file a grievance with the Guyana Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission.
