GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC—The Guyana government said Monday it had signed an agreement with Brazil allowing for new direct routes between the two countries.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said the agreement was signed under the Guyana/Brazil International Road Transport Agreement (IRTA). As a result, there are now three established international bus service routes between Brazil and Guyana.

It said that the three services would operate daily and twice daily and that the buses that will be allowed to ply the international routes shall not be older than eight years from the date of manufacture and must also possess several other facilities, including a seating capacity of at least 32 seats.

The ministry said that persons wishing to transport passengers must register as a Transporting Firm with the Commissioner of Customs & Trade Administration, followed by a tax identification number (TIN) and a public proxy instrument granting a legal representative in Brazil full powers to represent the firm in all legal and administrative acts.

It said the text must be in English and Portuguese.

“A Transporting Firm shall secure appropriate authorization from the National Agency for Road Transportation in Brazil to ply the above international routes,” the ministry said, adding that buses will be subject to the necessary Immigration & Customs Procedures in effect at the designated border points between Guyana and Brazil.
