Guyana’s High Commissioner to India, Dr. David Goldwin Pollard said on Wednesday that relations between Guyana and India will be strengthened through several upcoming projects.
During a courtesy call to Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Dr. Pollard spoke about several areas his office would focus on as he assumes his position in New Delhi, India. These include getting Guyana access to all lines of credit that were previously extended, and exploring the option of getting a new line of credit to assist in the area of renewable energy, as part of the Green State Development Program.
“We are looking at working with India on sustainable development goals and renewable energy,” he said.
Highlighting the other areas of cooperation, the High Commissioner said the construction of a by-pass road that will run from Ogle, east of the capital, Georgetown, to Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara, “is the biggest single project in this slew of projects”.
Among the other projects that will see collaboration between the two countries are: the rehabilitation of the Suddie, West Demerara and the Bartica Regional Hospitals; installation of more drainage pumps along the coast, particularly mobile pumps to assist during the rainy season; and the modernization of the Lady Northcote Ferry with a modern design.
During Wednesday’s courtesy call, Prime Minister Nagamootoo and Dr. Pollard, who is also High Commissioner to Indonesia and Sri Lanka, also discussed cricket, culture and other areas in which the two countries can strengthen relations.
They are hopeful that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi can visit Guyana later this year.
