BALTIMORE, CMC – Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell will address the “State of the Black World Conference” here later this month.

The organizers said that Mitchell would deliver a “Tribute to Maurice Bishop” at the April 19-23 event and participate in the Global Black Leaders Summit breakfast.

Bishop and his New Jewel Movement (NJM) seized power in a coup in 1979 in Grenada, removing the administration of the then-prime minister Sir Eric Gairy. Bishop served as Prime Minister of the People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG) until 1983 when he was overthrown in a palace coup and later executed.

“Under the leadership of Maurice Bishop, the Grenada Revolution inspired progressive Pan-Africanists around the world. It is inspiring to know that Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has called for a national commemoration honoring the life and legacy of Maurice Bishop this fall,” said Dr. Ron Daniels, President of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century and Convenor of the State of the Black World Conference

“God willing, as President of IBW, I plan to organize a delegation of African American leaders

The IBW director of communications and international relations and former press secretary to Maurice Bishop, Don Rojas, said, “We are delighted and honored to have PM Mitchell speak at the SOBWCV, especially to pay tribute to one of his predecessors, PM Maurice Bishop, a Pan-African icon and revolutionary who gave his life for the advancement of the Grenadian people in October 1983”.
